How to handle workplace sexual harassment

At home and online, many people are still in shock over Wednesday morning’s announcement on NBC’s the today show. Longtime anchor Matt Lauer was fired after the company says they’ve received complaints of sexual misconduct in the work place.

But it’s not something that only happens on the national level, it happens everywhere.

“We don’t want to talk about their bad behavior because they’re powerful," Dr. Creshema Murray said to a group of Honors Program students. 

Having an open conversation with students at the University of Houston Downtown, Asst. Professor of Corporate Communication Dr. Murray talked about workplace harassment.

“This is just the tip of the iceberg," Dr. Murray said. "Many people feel as if there’s going to be some type of retaliation.”

And more importantly, she talked about what to do about it. 

“Try to find different ways to document, not only through written, but also if there are witnesses, if you can go and write down immediately what happened after the occurrence happened, that way you provide documentation, on this date, at this time, in this room," Dr. Murray said. 

She says, then, you should take it to Human Resources. 

But, if you can’t do that, Aly Jacobs, with the Houston Area Women’s Center says you can call them. 

“We can discuss other options possibly with a police report or legal options that can be involved that we have connections with in the community," Jacobs said. 

She says the most important thing to know is that you're not alone. Another victim may only be a desk away. 

“There’s lots of survivors and lots of instances and repeated. So speaking out about it then can possibly prevent the perpetrator from doing it again because of the consequences for his actions," Jacobs said. 

Jacobs says one in every three people will become a victim of sexual violence.
